(Un)scripted political landscapes مشهديات سياسية مُرتجلة was an interdisciplinary university module dealing with contemporary socio-political concepts and narratives in and about the SWANA (South West Asia and Northern Africa) region, mainly focusing on Syria.
The project is part of a running doctorate research at Bauhaus University by Nawar Alhusari (please contact for sharing policies).
It was supervised by Nawar Alhusari & Markus Weisbeck.
Through lectures, guest talks, and practical exercises, we - a group of people with syrian, iranian, german and irish backgrounds and different connections to the SWANA region - produced a multimedia body of self-reflections and interpretations of the socio-political landscapes we researched on. The final project included short texts, banners, and a large map which explores the region through various terminologies and concepts, highlighting the interconnectedness with personal experiences.
The course offered a very welcoming and honest space to talk about political events, regardless of the prior knowledge and personal approach of the participants, and I think that such spaces are very important in a time so often characterised by a culture of (pretended) expertism.
The outcome was shown at Winterwerkschau at Bauhaus University 2024 as well as part of a fundraising exhibition for humanitarian aid in Gaza in collaboration with Kulturbrücke Palästina Weimar.
